Tauhou, waxeye (Zosterops lateralis)

The name Tauhou (meaning ‘stranger’ or ‘new arrival’) was selected to represent this process of arrival to connecting via new information and experiences. And is dedicated to the tauhou bird and non-human teacher who inspired this publishing concept.

This bird’s life amplified the individuation of lives beyond the human.

Philosophy

Sometimes the next best thing is a picture. Sometimes a picture is best.

Images are ancient and universal forms of communication we have a natural response to. Our eyes use up a lot of brain power and register many details we may first and only perceive instinctively.

Before words an image of a plant or animal made by another human says,

here,

look here...

I have - or some of us -

have…seen… this.

This lives with us! Their foot, was just so. Their leaf just like. A wing.

Just so that moment…

Hand crafted things hold a perceivable value that resonates with all humans. An investment of time. When the natural world is the subject not only the value of the artists time alone, but of the life they have been compelled to share that time with or in contemplation of. The tremor of a hand, breath, heart is integral to the work.
