Dear Denniston, Protect the Plateau!

$200.00

Protect the Plateau! Denniston is an area of scientific and ecological significance. Consents to mine the plateau for coal were denied in environmental court, then approved under the new Fast Track approvals scheme. To Protect the Plateau under the new fast track scheme it’s status as a scenic reserve (the lowest priority of public lands under the scheme) must be upgraded to that of a scientific reserve. This change in status will mean the plateau is protected even under Fast Track.

Fondly described as a dwarf forest, the native conifers covering much of the plateau may be hundreds of years old despite their reduced stature.Denniston Plateau is itself and ecological wonder, the ‘pavement’ of sandstone, with cracks filled with native conifers, mosses and other organic life acts similarly to a wetland.

Like a wetland, the ecological system of the plateau retains and filters moisture from the atmosphere, helping to stabilize local environmental and climatic conditions. There is much to be learned from the plateau in these times of climate instability.

50% of profits from sales goes directly to Forest and Bird, helping their campaign to save the plateau from the coal mining permitted to begin.
