Ko te hihi tētahi o ngā manu tino onge o Aotearoa. Kitea noatia puta noa i Te Ika-a-Māui i mua me ētahi motu tata mai, i ngaro i te tūwhenua i te 1890. Kei Te Hauturu-o-Toi anake te taupori tūturu kei te toe. Kua whakatūhia e 7 atu anō ngā taupori mā te whakauru atu nā ngā mahi whāomoomo.
Hihi is one of Aotearoa’s rarest birds. Once found throughout the North Island and several offshore islands they were extinct on the mainland by 1890. Only one natural population on Te Hauturu-o-Toi (Little Barrier) remains. Another 7 populations have been established by reintroduction thanks to conservation efforts.
